Your first and primary consideration before you decide to make your presence known on the World Wide Web, is to determine what it is you intend to accomplish...

We talk to clients daily who have become totally disenchanted with the Internet because their response has been far from spectacular. A lack of response can almost always be traced to a lack of understanding about site location...

If your internet service provider is offering you a free web page, it is generally worth just about what you paid for it. Ask yourself, "What is the ISP's profit motive?" Obviously they want your monthly Internet service fees. Unless you are also paying an extra fee for a spot or link from their shopping center, they have little concern whether you have any traffic at all. Is it any wonder businesses become discouraged when they see practically no response because their site is lost somewhere in cyberspace. Or worse yet, we are familiar with some hosts that will not recommend the use of hit counters. They assure their clients that all of the necessary information can be provided through reports. The problem with the "reports" is they are based on "hits", which at best, provides an invalid statistic on the number of visitors. If the hit counters are insisted upon by the client, frequently they are again designed to provide data demand information.

Example; this site has over thirty pages, our statistical data indicates the average visitor views seventeen pages, we know that we are currently receiving about 120 visits a month, with a data demand analysis or adjusted hit counters we could easily be confused with a totally inappropriate statistical data assumption of over 2000 visitors per month. If we then based our sales data on 2000 visitors, rather than the actual 120, in determining our sales/contact ratio, our data would be totally useless for things such as adjusting market strategies. WEB DESIGN Associates finds this practice unethical and deceptive at the very least. So, if your company is dealing with an ISP, or host, or web designer that appears intent on explaining the disadvantages of using hit counters, and there are some, just be careful, you may be about ready to buy a bottle of snake oil with your web site....

Among the many site location sources available are the international commercial shopping malls. Many of these have thousands of "merchants" producing or providing the same products or services you will be offering. Can your product pricing compete with a supplier from a third world country? Possibly yes, likely, no. Where does the shopping mall put their advertising dollars? They invariably spend their ad budget acquiring new merchants, not customers for the mall. The only guarantees they can provide is an abundance of traffic to their mall, which does not guarantee ONE visitor to your web site....
